Arenberg Doctoral School - Skills Training
Email writing (2 sessions of 2 hours)
- The sessions aim at making your emails more effective by focussing on style, structure and language functions used in emails. Your emails are discussed and there is ample time for practice.
- You are expected to send two examples of emails you wrote, preferably upon registration. A writing task is set in session one and personal feedback is given in session two. Emails should be sent to: inge.vandurme@ilt.kuleuven.be. Please mention ADS Email writing semester 1 (or 2) in your subject line.
Meeting skills (2 sessions of 2 hours)
- The sessions focus on the language, organization and interaction typical of effective and efficient meetings. Session one provides information and language to be used during the simulation in session two. Time is spent on input as well as on practice.
- You are expected to complete a short task to prepare the simulation held in session two.
Telephoning skills (1 session of 3 hours)
- The training session aims to improve your ability to communicate in English within the context of telephone conversations. An overview is given of typical telephone language and there is ample time for practice.
Writing for a general audience (2 sessions of 2 hours)
- The training sessions aim to advise you on how to write about a scientific subject in an interesting and accessible way. In order to appeal to a wide audience, appropriate language, style and structure are essential. Authentic examples will be analysed and your own texts will be discussed.
- You are expected to write a one-page text presenting your research to a general audience. This text should be sent to inge.vandurme@ilt.kuleuven.be by 3 February 2012.
