Target group and entry requirements
This course is aimed at students enrolling for a Masters programme at KU Leuven who wish to upgrade their Academic English language skills. A complementary course, the General English Crash Course, which
focuses on speaking skills, is offered for the same target group.
Aims and course content
The course focuses on general writing skills and on writing Academic English.
Objectives
- improving structure (structuring research papers, building good paragraphs, using discourse markers)
- improving style (conciseness, clarity, formal academic register)
- achieving grammatical and lexical accuracy
- improving lay-out (increasing transparency and consistency)
- Ten 3-hour seminars including:
- genre analysis of academic texts
- general and academic writing activities (in class as well as at home)
- exercises on grammatical and lexical features of Academic English
- Individual feedback sessions to discuss English texts to be submitted for other courses

Schedule
The course is offered twice during the academic year:
- First semester (AE1):
- 3 October - 19 December 2011
- 3 hours/week: Mon 6-9 p.m.
- First session on Monday 3 October at 6 p.m. (Meeting point: ILT student office, room 00.123)
- Second semester (AE2):
- 20 February - 21 May 2012
- 3 hours/week: Mon 6-9 p.m.
- First session on Monday 20 February at 6 p.m. (Meeting point: ILT student office, room 00.123)

Please register online or at the ILT student office- from 20/05/11 to 01/10/11 for AE1 (first semester): All places have been filled, but you can add your name to the waiting list. You will be contacted by email if more places become available.
