DIALANG is an assessment system intended for adult (individual) language learners who want to obtain diagnostic information about their proficiency (of formal language use) for reading, speaking and writing in fourteen languages, including English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian. DIALANG’s Assessment Framework and self-assessment statements are based on the Common European Framework (CEF)
Dialang thus also gives feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of the learner’s proficiency and advice about how to improve language skills. Furthermore, it attempts to raise the awareness of language learning and proficiency. As such, it is also a good tool in hands of language teachers. The system does not issue certificates. To that end we refer to the EUROPASS and the European Language Portfolio (ELP). We refer the user to webcef.eu and cefcult.eu to diagnose their oral and intercultural language competences online.
The DIALANG project was carried out with the financial support of the European Commission, Directorate-General for Education and Culture (SOCRATES Programme, LINGUA Action D) in the nineties. Until 2010 it was freely available from the internet and maintained by the University of Lancaster. Generations of students at the Faculty of Economics have been using it for English. We hope to continue this service now that Dialang is available from the ILT-server of the KULeuven, for educational use only, as stated in the following permission:
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of EDT, 26 sept. 2011*, Mrs. Gillian Mc Laughlin, Head of the Project LifeLongLearning, European Council Brussels, gave Lut Baten, professor at ILT, and cooperator of DIALANG, the permission to use Dialang and install it on the server of ILT, KULeuven for educational purposes only.
As a longstanding and grateful project collaborator of European projects, I strongly insist the user respect this permission. For all requests concerning copyright, we refer the user to: Language Policy Division, Council of Europe, Strasbourg.
